The scene you already know

It's Monday. 09:00. School gate.

Backpacks hanging. Kids running. Someone calling your name from a distance.

And then it happens.

A mum walks up to you. She starts talking. And you smile before you understand. You nod before you know what you're agreeing to.

"¿Venís al cumpleaños mañana?"

For a second, everything goes quiet. You're not really listening anymore. You're translating. Searching. Hoping your face looks normal.

And at some point in that conversation… you disappear a little. Again.

Does any of this sound familiar?

"Sometimes I pretend to be busy on my phone so I don't have to do the awkward small talk."

"I'm tired of my child translating things for me."

"In my own language I'm funny, quick, opinionated. Here I sound like I've lost half my personality."

"I don't want to spend years living in Spain feeling like a background character in my own life."

It's not your brain. It's not your effort. It's not you.

Why learning Spanish as a mum in Spain feels so hard

You've done the classes. Downloaded the apps. Tried to be consistent.

Nobody really tells you this: learning a language as an exhausted adult with children and a sleep-deprived brain has very little to do with memorising grammar rules. Everything you've tried was built for someone else: apps for commuters, grammar courses for students with two free hours and a quiet room.

You didn't fail the system. The system wasn't built for you.

Most Spanish courses are built around one idea: study enough, and eventually you'll speak. That's not how the brain acquires a language. Acquiring happens through stories, repetition and hearing the same words in situations from your real life, until they stop being "words" and start being just... thought.

There's a difference between learning a language and acquiring one. And it's the difference that changes everything.

I know what you're going through.
Because I've been there too.

Marta, founder of Habla MAMA, holding her daughter outdoors

I raised my children in a language that didn't always feel like mine. And things didn't suddenly change when my English got better. They changed when I stopped trying to sound perfect — when I showed up anyway, even when it felt uncomfortable and messy.

That's when things started shifting.

Because here's the truth:

You don't need perfect Spanish. You need Spanish for the life you actually live as a parent.
How it works

How our online Spanish classes for mums work

Habla MAMA is not just Spanish classes. It's a programme built around the real conversations and situations mothers face every day in a way that brings consistency without overwhelm.

You'll learn the Spanish you need to speak with doctors, teachers, other parents, shopkeepers and service providers, so you can navigate daily life with greater confidence and independence. Because learning a language is easier when you're practising the conversations that actually matter to you.

Every week looks like this:
Mum walking with a pram and headphones, listening to a Spanish audio lesson before class
01Before class

You listen first

An audio + transcript with real situations from your life here. Your brain meets the language before you have to use it, while you cook, drive or walk.

Marta teaching a live online Habla MAMA Spanish class to a small group of mums
02Once a week · live

We meet online in a small group

Maximum six mums in the same situation as you. Stories, role plays and real-life conversations. You speak, you forget words, you laugh, you try again.

Mum at the gym with headphones, listening to a Spanish consolidation audio after class
03After class

The language sinks in

A consolidation audio with the same story and key phrases, so it stays with you. The moment you think: "wait… I actually understood that."

Everything in your pocket

All your materials in one mobile app

Every audio, transcript and practice lives in a mobile app, so immersing yourself in Spanish is as easy as pressing play: on the school run, while you cook or during nap time. This is what makes you progress with consistency and strategy, in a way that's adapted to a mother's life.

And beyond the language

While you learn Spanish in a flexible, consistent and enjoyable way, you'll also learn to:

Mum chatting confidently in Spanish with other parents at the school gate

Manage the discomfort

The embarrassment, the overthinking, the internal judgment, the freeze. We work on your emotional fluency, so nothing stops you from showing up in Spanish.

Woman ordering a coffee and chatting with the waiter at a traditional Spanish bar

Read the cultural codes in Spain

Intercultural communication so you understand tone, humour and indirectness (and why "ya veremos" rarely means "we'll see"), and stop wondering if people are arguing or just having a casual chat!

Messages from the Habla MAMA community of mums on WhatsApp

Do it with other mothers who get it

A community of mums on WhatsApp, plus an extra monthly session where you connect, laugh and get extra practice. You stop feeling like the only one finding this hard.

Before you ask about the live session schedule…

Don't worry. The programme is designed to offer flexibility and accommodate different schedules. You'll attend one live class per week, scheduled within one of the available time slots below. Live classes take place Tuesday to Thursday in small groups of maximum 6 people.

What you'll learn to talk about

The Spanish you'll actually use as a mum in Spain

Every lesson is built around real situations from your life here. No hotel bookings, no describing your hometown. These are the conversations we practise together:

01

At school

Mum talking with her daughter's teacher at the school gate in Spain

Talking to teachers, chatting at school events, parent meetings and finally understanding the school WhatsApp group.

02

At the doctor's

Mum and her son talking with a paediatrician in Spain

Talking to the paediatrician, explaining symptoms, understanding treatments and asking for what you need at the pharmacy.

03

Social life

Two neighbours chatting on the staircase of their building in Spain

Starting conversations with neighbours, other parents and your in-laws, and keeping them going.

04

Everyday life & free time

Woman chatting with her hairdresser at a salon in Spain

Shopping, restaurants, the hairdresser, travelling… all the moments that fill your week.

05

Plans & get-togethers

Mums chatting at a children's birthday party in the park

Organising birthday parties, playdates and meet-ups with other families.

06

Your life & your children

Mums talking about their children at the playground

Talking about your country, your life in Spain, your children, parenting and behaviour.

Always with natural, everyday Spanish: the way people really speak here, not textbook Spanish.

This is what happens when you stop surviving conversations

What mums in Spain say about Habla MAMA

I've just completed Habla, Mama programme with Marta, and it has been a fantastic part of my Spanish language learning journey so far. I've always struggled with textbook learning and, despite living here for six years, I lacked the confidence to speak at all. However, since working with Marta and experiencing her teaching style, things are finally changing.

I especially love the audios that incorporate what we've covered in class into real-life scenarios. Being able to listen to them while cooking, putting my baby to bed, or walking the dog has really helped me consolidate my learning. Thanks to Marta, I feel more confident, I'm speaking more, and I'm genuinely excited to continue improving my Spanish!

Naomi O'Connor

I feel much more confident after taking the course with Marta. I notice myself recognising more words and phrases in my day to day life and approach talking to pediatricians and medical professionals with more ease.

Ailis Oliver-Kerby · New mum

My son started in guardería this week and because of all the specific vocab I had learned from you I was able to navigate the Spanish with his teachers and the director confidently 😀

Habla MAMA student · via WhatsApp

I really liked that the Habla Mama course focuses on topics that are relevant to real life! Finally I didn't have to learn directions or endless grammar with no context to real life. I found the audios easy to follow and felt comfortable during the weekly classes. I am way more confident in speaking and even if I know it's not perfect I still try anyway. I have been talking more with other mums at school, in shops and with neighbours.

Sound like you? Keep reading.

Habla MAMA is for you if:

You moved to Spain and expected the language to come with time — but it hasn't, not in the way you need it to.
You understand more than you can say, but when someone speaks to you unexpectedly, everything disappears.
You've tried apps, classes or private tutors — and you're still in the same place.
You're not looking for a certificate. You're looking to stop feeling like a background character in your own life.
There are two ways in — which one is you?

Two levels: beginner or intermediate Spanish

Habla MAMA Conversational

You've picked up words here and there

Maybe you started an A1 course once. You know "buenos días" and can order a coffee, but the moment a conversation goes beyond that, you freeze or smile and nod. You've been in Spain for months, maybe years, but your life still happens mostly in English: your job, your friendships, your WhatsApp groups. Spanish has stayed on the outside. This is where you start speaking it for real, in the situations that actually matter to you as a mother here.

Habla MAMA Flow

You know the grammar — but still can't speak

You've studied. You know the grammar. You can read menus, follow instructions, understand bits of conversation. But the moment someone speaks to you at normal speed, everything disappears. You still reach for the translator. You still wait for your partner to handle the difficult conversations. You still feel like a quieter, smaller version of yourself every time you have to speak. You don't need more grammar. You need to stop translating in your head and start actually being in the conversation. This is where that finally happens.

Not sure which one is yours? We'll figure it out together.

What's included

What else is included in the Spanish programme for mums

Between sessions

Ongoing support

For the moments where real life happens and you need help with an actual conversation, message or situation you're dealing with that week.

Real application

Fluency strategies + audio library

For moments where you didn't understand everything but want to keep the conversation going instead of panicking. A growing audio library so your brain absorbs Spanish naturally — including those verb endings that never seem to stick in traditional classes.

New · monthly

El café en español

A monthly live gathering designed to spark spontaneous conversations with other mums, offer personalised language coaching, and share practical strategies to build fluency and confidence.

Frequently asked questions about Habla MAMA

What if I don't have time?
This programme was designed for mothers with real lives. All the materials are in a mobile app, and the audios can be listened to while cooking, driving or walking. You don't need to sit down filling in a workbook for hours. It works with your life, not against it.
Is Habla MAMA online or in person?
It's online. The live sessions are small-group video classes, so you can join from anywhere in Spain, and the audios and transcripts go with you wherever you are.
What if I can't make the live sessions?
You can watch the replay afterwards and ask questions inside the WhatsApp group. You're never left alone trying to figure things out by yourself.
How many people are in each group?
Usually around 5 or 6 women, never more than 6. Small enough that everyone participates, speaks and gets personal feedback — without feeling invisible in a huge class.
But I'm shy speaking in groups…
Nobody gets put on the spot to perform. We create stories together, repeat naturally and adapt conversations to each woman's real life — so speaking starts feeling much more natural, much sooner.
Can I join with my baby or child?
Yes. Babies and children are welcome. This programme is built around motherhood — not around pretending motherhood doesn't exist.
What time are the live sessions?
Live sessions take place Tuesday to Thursday, between 10:00 and 17:30 (Spanish mainland time). Once you enrol, you'll be placed in a small group that matches your level and availability.
What if this isn't for me?
There's a 15-day money back guarantee.
What makes this different from other Spanish courses?
The method is different and so are the conversations. Most courses teach generic topics. Here we work with the situations that actually shape your life as a mother in Spain. That's why women usually start communicating much earlier — the content is immediately relevant, and the whole method is built around how the brain actually acquires language, not just studies it.
Is this only for mums? Can dads join too?
Absolutely. Habla MAMA was built around the experience of raising children in Spain — and that's not just a mum thing. Dads are very welcome. And if both of you want to join, there's a couples discount — just mention it on the call and we'll sort it out.
I'm already doing another Spanish course. Is it still worth joining?
Probably not if your current course is already helping you handle conversations with teachers, talk about your child's development and navigate real day-to-day life as a parent in Spain. But most courses aren't built for that. Habla MAMA is specifically designed for mothers who need real comprehension and oral fluency in the situations they actually face every week. That changes the way you learn completely.
Habla MAMA student feedback: the classes felt like a safe space and the audios before and after each lesson were easy to fit into the day
Who's on the other side
Marta, Neurolanguage Coach and founder of Habla MAMA, Spanish classes for expat mums in Spain

Hola, I'm Marta

A language coach and a mum of two from Spain. I taught Spanish at Bristol University for more than a decade, then became a mum abroad myself — googling vocabulary before midwife appointments, leaving conversations wondering if I'd really understood.

Motherhood already comes with enough overwhelm. Doing it in another language just adds a whole new layer of stress and insecurity to everything.

That's why, when I moved back to Spain, I went back to study. Cognitive Grammar. TPR Storytelling. And I became a certified Neurolanguage Coach® accredited by the International Coaching Federation.

Because I wanted to teach the way I wished someone had taught me. Learner-centred. Emotionally aware. Built around your goals — not a textbook's. A space where you feel safe enough to open your mouth, make mistakes and keep going.

Imagine this
Listening to the paediatrician and not missing half the appointment because you were busy translating in your head.

Replying to the school WhatsApp group without opening Google Translate first.

Going to a birthday party and actually joining the conversation — instead of standing slightly outside of it, pretending to watch your child.

Understanding your neighbour at the door. Following the teacher's feedback without nodding and hoping for the best. Calling the doctor yourself. Feeling like yourself again — in the country you've chosen to call home.

That's what's on the other side of this.
